“Acid Running - Return to Albion”

Magazine feature for Acid Running, detailing their new Return to Albion campaign

“Albion. It’s probably a word that most associate with a certain West Midlands football team, but what does it actually mean?

Put simply, Albion is a word for Great Britain, but not Great Britain as we know it today...

In ancient times Albion was something of a fairytale, a subject that would be romantically discussed after several jars of mead. Albion was a mythical, fairytale version of Great Britain, one that ancient travelers would use as if they were referring to some kind of legendary homeland.

Poets like the great William Blake and Percy Bysshe Shelley would speak of Albion in their writing, longing for an idealized version of Britain, far removed from the rapidly industrializing version that they called home.

If Albion felt out of reach for poets in the 1800s, you can only begin to imagine how far we must be in the present day. However, you can’t just give up. Remember that good always prevails over evil, and if you really go looking for Albion, you might just find it...

One brand that shares our optimism in finding the mythical land is Acid Running, who have just launched their collection titled ‘Return to Albion’

Being based in the bustling metropolis of Londiminium, returning to Albion is something that Acid Running are as enthusiastic about as anyone. Everyone knows that going for a run is good for you, whether that be on Hackney’s busy streets or through Hyde Park’s slightly balding grounds, but no one can deny the benefits of running in the true outdoors.

Being about as geographically removed from the true outdoors as they could be, the Acid Running lot were going to need some help if they truly wanted to find Albion - we were more than happy to assist with our ever-expanding knowledge of the North West’s beautiful outdoors.”

Under the protection of candlelight we unraveled our tabula of Great Britain (tapped on Google Maps) and began honing in on areas where we believed the chances of finding Albion was high...

After hours of searching far and wide we finally settled on a place that had all the characteristics of what Blake had spoke of in his poems...

Dovedale, a quaint Peak District valley, split in two by the mighty River Dove.

At the crack of dawn one misty morning, we loaded the van, drew a big red circle on the map, reassured Acid Running that Northerners don’t actually eat people, and headed for Derbyshire.

As we drove further into the wilderness, tower blocks turned into trees and greys turned into greens. We could never had said for sure, but the closer we got to Dovestone, the closer we subconsciously felt to home.

We rolled into the heavily fortified National Trust car park - the only barrier between ourselves and the mythical homeland – paid the £7 parking charge, and beheld the natural beauty in front of us. There was no doubt about it. This was it. This was Albion.

In astonishment the Acid Running lads kitted up with bits from their latest collection, and started doing what they do best... Running, not acid.

The photos across these pages are what we captured from the day as we meandered through the woodland, across the River Dove and into Dovestone’s iconic Limestone chasms.

The area is truly beautiful, as is Acid Running’s gear. If you’re ever feeling the weight of city life, we’d recommend going in search of Albion yourself.”
